Course Description:

HPV, Cervical Dysplasia, Cancer and Chinese Medicine: Prevention and Treatment of Gynecological HPV-Related Illness and Cancers

Endometriosis East and West: A Clinical and Research Based Approach

In Day 1 and part of Day 2, Dr. Misha Cohen will outline the treatment of women with gynecological human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and its relationship to cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. Cervical carcinoma is one of the most common cancers among women, with an estimated 16,000 new cases of invasive cancer of the cervix and 5,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. The main focus of this course will be on traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis, herbal treatment, acupuncture/moxibustion treatment of various levels of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and prevention of cancers associated with HPV infection. Also included will be discussion on the Western medicine approaches to HPV treatment and case management with Western providers.

Day 2 of the seminar will explore the interrelationship and integration of clinical Chinese herbal medicine practice and Chinese herbal research for endometriosis in women, including the etiology and pathogenesis of endometriosis from both Eastern and Western perspectives and the pharmacologic effects of Chinese herbs used in endometriosis pain, which is the focus of Dr. Cohen's current research.

Blood Pathology and Bleeding Disorders in Gynecology

Integrating her extensive clinical experience and work with her teacher Dr. Qiu Xiao-mei, Sharon Weizenbaum will address the nature of blood and bleeding physiology with careful attention to the details of diagnosing the root cause of bleeding disorders in gynecology. After establishing clear and thorough diagnostic methods, treatment strategies will be discussed for a wide range of clinical situations. Using a phased approach, protocols and herbs will be presented for different treatment stages, acute and chronic situations, mild and heavy bleeding, and methods of consolidation and prevention once bleeding has been controlled.

This class will help you treat peri-menopausal bleeding, bleeding from fibroids, endometriosis, and other beng luo presentations of various causes, with multiple case studies to illustrate clinical application. Basic training protocols for the treatment of bleeding issues are often over-simplified to address only the stopping of bleeding. But it is the diagnostic and treatment precision that allows for the successful resolution of these complex disorders and their root causes. Sharon will be sharing the innovative and previously un-translated material of Dr. Qiu Xiao-mei.

Healing the Heart and Spirit in Women

In this seminar, Tiffany Pollard will speak to the integration of mind, body and spirit. Women are working and raising children, confronting a changing role in the family, community and the world, and often struggling with issues of intimacy and sexuality. This class will offer new perspectives on emotional-spiritual balance, diagnosing underlying causes, and using acupuncture to treat the root of anxiety and depression, while helping women to understand themselves and heal their wounds.

You will develop tools that include Five Element diagnostics taught within a modern cultural context and hone your ability to truly see and listen with your entire being. We will explore the use of acupuncture points based on the 'inner tradition' of Chinese medicine, and the powerfully therapeutic use of metaphor and 'elemental language'. Special topics include the discussion of women's relationship between food and emotions, peri-menopausal transitions, and sexual abuse/betrayal.

Windows of Transition: From Menarche to Menopause

Cindy Micleu will be teaching the last seminar in the series, discussing key times in a woman's life when dramatic hormonal changes occur, in particular at menarche, after pregnancy and childbirth, and menopause. These times often mark major life transitions and are accompanied by significant changes in both the body and the mental/emotional framework. At the same time, they also offer a "window" through which profound change can be made and health influenced for years into the future.

This course will address the imbalances that can occur at these pivotal times, and how to address them from a variety of perspectives, including both acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Hormonal changes can lead to a host of problems such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, headaches, acne, menstrual disorders, urinary issues, temperature imbalance, hypertension, and more. Emphasis will be on understanding the root of these problems, treatment of specific issues, and on patient education that helps women understand how to listen and work with their changing bodies to create health.
